Serbia to focus on ecology

“Ample EU environmental regulations spread on more than 20,000 pages, and Serbia, during its preparations to resume EU integrations, should set up institutions to deal with the adoption of EU environmental directives and the amendmends of existent domestic laws that regulate the environmental field,” he said.

Slokar went on to explain that Serbian companies “need to initiate the process of tuning their operational technology to suit the EU environmental standards at least several years before Serbia would join the European Union.”

He gave an example of a Slovenian oil refinery that had to be closed even though it was profitable at the time, because it had failed to meet the European directive on the quality of fuel.
