October 5 changes were big scam financed from abroad - Dacic

According to Dacic, Vojislav Kostunica, the candidate of the opposition coalition DOS in the presidential election held on September 24, 2000, did not actually win.

"I am personally very grateful for October 5, because, if it weren't for it, I would not have become the president of the SPS," said Dacic, who was an SPS official at the time, and returned to power in a coalition with the Democrats (DS) in 2008.

In addition, the Socialist leader also stated that October 5 was "one big scam."

"I'm not talking about ordinary people, but about the way it was carried out and prepared, financed from abroad - I'm talking about Kostunica not winning, and I'm talking about those who carried out October 5. Where are they now, and where am I? I am in my place in my party, and they have betrayed everything, both the people and their parties, they changed everything they could change," Dacic said.

Speaking about the anniversary on Thursday, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic - who was at the time a member of Vojislav Seselj's Radicals (SRS) and served as minister of information - said that he "had no particular opinion about October 5" and that the event had "both good and bad sides to it."

Leader of the Democrats Dragan Sutanovac, however, said that October 5, 2000 was "one of the most important dates in modern Serbian history."

"Citizens at the time voted against wars, misery, poverty, sanctions, and in favor of a European perspective of Serbia, a democratic modern country that will meet European standards," he said on Thursday.
