"Russia knows we're going to EU; Serbia is not homophobic"

Asked how people in Serbia have received the first woman and openly gay premier, Brnabic replied that she has been openly gay her whole life and never had a problem in this country.

"So I would like to think that Serbia is not that conservative or homophobic, or xenophobic for that matter. There's certainly room to improve and change and there's certainly still people who think this is not okay, that this is not part of our tradition and part of our accepted values, but I do also think that they are a loud minority," she said.

Brnabic told the US network that she feels she has "a huge support from the people of Serbia."

She said that her government has full continuity with the previous one, led by Aleksandar Vucic.

"We had huge successes in the past three years. We had full fiscal consolidation, before that we were three months from bankruptcy, we now have full macro-economic stability," Brnabic said during the interview.

"Serbia is deeply and strategically dedicated to EU accession. I'll remind you that we have to new ministries (for EU integration and environmental protection) and are clearly communicating that our strategic goal is the EU, that's where we're going," she said.

"This is what this new government is communicating, to all of its citizens and all of its partners, including Russia. Russia is a big market for us, they're a huge trading partner, and apart from that, without any doubt, the Serbian people are traditionally, and in terms of religion, very connected to Russia," Brnabic said.

"Serbia needs new jobs, new companies, we had good GDP growth of 2.5 percent last year, three percent projected for this year, I'm hoping 3.5 percent for 2019 - but for that we really need to be responsible towards all of our citizens, and keep our ties to Russia, and that is one important source of our growth," the prime minister said.
