"Serbia's EU path does not depend on Brexit"

Dacic and Asselborn "underlined that there is a common interest in further deepening of all forms of bilateral cooperation, especially in the field of the economy," the Serbian government announced, citing a statement issued by the Serbian MFA.

Dacic "expressed gratitude for the continued support of Luxembourg to the European integration process of Serbia and voiced hope that it will continue."

Asselborn "evaluated positively the continuation of comprehensive reforms implemented by the Serbian government and confirmed the readiness of Luxembourg to continue support to the European integration of Serbia."

The two officials also exchanged opinions regarding the current issues in the region and the EU, the migrant crisis and other international topics, according to the statement.

"Serbia's objective is a soonest possible, full EU membership," Dacic told a joint news conference held after the meeting.

"Our objectives are unchanged irrespective of the current disputes within the EU," he said.

According to Asselborn, Serbia will soon open Chapter 29 in its EU accession talks, which relates to the customs union, with four more chapters ready.

Serbia's EU path does not depend on Brexit, he said on a historic day that saw Britain formally embark on the road of leaving the EU.

While in Belgrade, Asselborn was also received by Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, and signed a memorandum on police cooperation with Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic.
