Kosovo is Serbia's southern province where ethnic Albanians in 2008 unilaterally declared independence - a proclamation Serbia does not recognize and considers a violation of its territorial integrity.

Reacting to Petersen's statement, Dacic said, in a statement issued by his ministry late on Wednesday, that his country was "dedicated to a policy of peace and trust in the region, but would not desist from the stand that a lasting solution should be found through dialogue."

"Which country in the world would accept the unilaterally declared secession of part of its territory? Why is his country, Denmark, trying so hard to keep Greenland, which is 3,500 kilometers away, or the Faroe Islands, which are 1,300 kilometers way?" asked Dacic.

He said Serbia was not destabilizing Kosovo but that Pristina was doing so by refusing to form the Community of Serb Municipalities, as envisaged in the Brussels agreement, adding that Petersen's urging the EU to bring greater pressure to bear on Serbia, and that the issue of the status of Kosovo had been solved, was "particularly cynical."

"Petersen thought it appropriate to attack Serbia for not applauding the independence of Kosovo, although he used to be the chief of the UN mission, the organization whose Resolution 1244 is still in effect. Perhaps it would be good if he were to request this of his own country Denmark, which has annulled the unilaterally proclaimed independence of the Faroe Islands," Dacic said.

"Something's rotten in these principles of the Danish diplomat Petersen. Let him apply them to others, for example, let him start with his own country," the Serbian foreign minister said.
