Supervisory Board
Mr Harlan M. Mandel
Mr. Mandel has been Deputy Managing Director of MDLF since 1998.
Before that, he practiced law in the New York and Los Angeles
offices of Morrison & Foerster, specializing in international
litigation, intellectual property and new media law. He also serves
on the investment committee for the Independent Press Association's
loan fund for independent U..S media. He was awarded a Juris Doctor
degree from Columbia University School of Law in 1989, and holds
a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Asian
Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Mandel is a U.S.
citizen and a member of the New York and California Bars. He lives
in New York.
Mr Boris Husovic
Mr. Husovic serves as the representative of employees
in the Supervisory Board. He has been with B92 since 1990, being
involved in production and broadcasting of numerous radio and
TV news programs on B92. Currently Mr. Husovic is an Intake Editor
with B92 TV.
Board of Directors
Mr Veran Matic, Chairman
B92's Editor-in-Chief and General Manager. Mr. Matic has been
engaged in journalism since 1984 with alternative and youth media
in Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana. He began his career with NTV
Studio B, Belgrade's formerly independent television station.
In May 1989 he established Radio B92, the first independent radio
station in Serbia. Under his guidance, during the past 16 years,
Radio B92 has set up and developed its numerous activities with
focus on three media - radio, television and internet. Mr. Matic
is also a co-founder of the Association of Independent Electronic
Media (ANEM). He is one of the most uncompromising fighters for
media freedom, and freedom of expression, leading him to receive
numerous prestigious international awards for his work over the
last 15 years.
Curriculum Vitae
Ms Elena Popovic, Board Member
Ms. Popovic is an attorney with eight years of lending and investment
experience in emerging markets. Ms. Popovic joined MDLF as Counsel
in 1997 and became its General Counsel in 2004. Before joining
MDLF, Ms. Popovic worked as a coordinator of the Legal Policy
Task force for the former Yugoslavia for the Forced Migration
Projects of the Open Society Institute. Prior to that, she was
secretary general of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in
Serbia. Earlier, she served as secretary general of the Council
for Human Rights of the Belgrade-based Center for Anti-War Action.
She is a graduate of the University of Belgrade School of Law
and holds an LL.M degree from the New York University School of
Law.
Mr Jaroslaw Gora, Board Member
Mr. Gora is a Director of Finance of MDLF. He has extensive professional
experience in the field of media strategy and investment analysis
and has supervised a number of independent media investments in
Central and Eastern Europe and in the former Soviet Union. Before
joining MDLF in 1997, Mr. Gora managed the capital investment
department of a Warsaw chemicals conglomerate. He has been on
the supervisory board of the Polish Investment Association and
was a Project Manager at the Foundation for Privatization in Warsaw.
Mr. Gora holds an MA degree in Economic Theory from the SGH School
of Commerce in Warsaw and attended the General Manager Program
(TGMP) at Harvard Business School in 2001. He is a Polish citizen
and lives in Warsaw.
Mr Sasa Vucinic, Board Member
Managing director of MDLF ever since he co-founded it in 1995.
Previously, he worked in Prague as a media consultant to the Soros
Foundations. In that position, he designed and oversaw projects
assisting independent media organizations in Central and Eastern
Europe and the former Soviet Union. From 1990 to 1993, Mr. Vucinic
was the editor-in-chief and general manager of Radio B92 in Belgrade,
Yugoslavia's most important and respected independent radio station.
He began his journalism career as a reporter at the weekly political
newsmagazine Non, eventually becoming its editor-in-chief.
Mr Nebojsa Samardzic, Board Member
Lawyer, member of the Belgrade Bar since 1987, when he started
his practice. Since 1996, actively engaged in the field of protection
of independent media.
Mr Sinisa Mali, Board Member
Director of the NCA Investment Group company from Belgrade and
member of the Board of Directors of Soko Štark Belgrade. M.A.
at the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade. Currently writing a doctor's
thesis at the same faculty. Also, M.A.at the Washington University
in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. (field: finance). Has a title of
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and is a member of the CFA Institute.
Has a license for portfolio manager for Serbia's Commission for
Securities. Since 2001 worked as an assistant of the minister
for privatization in the Ministry for Economy and Privatization
and as a director of the Centre for Tenders in the Privatization
Agency. Before that, he worked as an executive in the Financial
Advisory Services part of Deloitte & Touche in Belgrade and
Prague, as well as Credit Suisse First Boston investment bank
(CSFB) in New York.
Jacob Grapengiesser, Board member
Member of the portfolio management team, joined East Capital in
2002. He was an analyst with Brunswick Emerging Markets for three
years before joining East Capital. Prior to that, he worked at
Khanty Mansiysk Oil Corporation (KMOC) in Moscow. He has studied
at the Stockholm School of Economics, the Royal Institute of Technology
and Cornell University, USA. Jacob is fluent in Swedish, Russian
and English.
