We are talking about the period when Ukraine was under the USSR headed by Joseph Stalin, when several million people died.

"From today's point of view, historically and politically, genocide is obvious," the Bundestag statement said.

"Millions of Ukrainians died in the Holodomor through systematic starvation. Thank you (Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine) Dmytro Kuleba for his contribution to call this crime by its current name - genocide,'' Baerbock wrote on Twitter.

Last week, the parliaments of Romania, Ireland and Moldova declared the Holodomor a genocide against Ukrainians.

Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Holodomor every year on the fourth Saturday in November, and this year, that date was November 26.

The Ukrainian newspaper "Kyiv Independent" states that Ukraine tried to have the Holodomor internationally recognized as an act of genocide, and that so far more than 20 countries have declared the Holodomor a genocide.
