Austrian chancellor wants to annul 1,000 EU rules
Kurz told the Vienna daily Osterreich that there has been enough of "EU regulation insanity," as well as of rules being imposed from Brussels. He pointed out that his goal was to erase 1,000 EU rules, such as the unnecessary rules on "steaks and French fries" - by which the EU determines what these foods should look like.
"No one needs Brussels to prescribe how to prepare a steak," Kurz said, adding that the EU should address major challenges such as external border protection, security, or climate change.
According to him, the European peace project is increasingly becoming a "tight bureaucratic space" for its citizens.
All this was met with fierce criticism by the opposition, who said the chancellor stood "against the EU."
