"Today, Maduro does not have the support of the army," he claimed during a two-minute video.

"On May 1, we continue the fight in the streets of the entire country," Guaido said.

He added that what was happening was "not a military coup, but peaceful rebellion against a tyrant who is afraid to show his face to the people of Venezuela."

Guaido also said that Venezuelans now have a chance to choose their future.

"All Venezuela must be on the streets," he concluded.

After this, Maduro also addressed the public.

According to the Guardian, he said the coup had been defeated.

During the address, Maduro was surrounded by politicians and military personnel. He said Guaido's attempt at a coup had been defeated and asked for applause for "the brave army."

He also said that Venezuela would never surrender to "imperialist forces."

In his long speech, Maduro named Leopoldo Lopez, whom he referred to as "fascist," as one of the main initiators of the coup. He said the conspiracy was discovered at 04:15 hours in the morning local time. He added that some suspects have already been questioned.

"This cannot go unpunished. All those involved must surrender," Maduro said.

The government, he continued, showed it had "nerves of steel" and carried out an effective action.

Venezuelan Minister of Defense Vladimir Padrino Lopez warned that the army will use force if necessary - after footage emerged of opposition supporters moving towards the presidential palace in Caracas, RT is reporting.

He also said that opposition leader Guaido, who called on the army to rebel and overthrow President Maduro, would be responsible for any possible deaths in the streets, and accused anti-government forces of "wanting bloodshed."

On Tuesday morning local time Juan Guaido used Twitter to call for overthrowing Maduro. After that, chaos broke out in Caracas.
