The European Parliament (EP) and the Union members now have the authority to ratify that decision, Avramopoulos said, adding that the authorities in Pristina have completed a tough job and succeeded in accomplishing the required results, especially in the fight against organized crime and corruption, and the decisive matter was the signing of the agreement with Montenegro on determining the frontier line."We are now inviting the European Council and Parliament to proceed and adopt our proposition," Avramopoulos said at a joint news conference with Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, who also addressed reporters, although in Albanian, for which there was no translation into an official EU language, Beta said.
According to present indications, the majority of European Parliament members seem to be inclined towards the visa liberalization for Kosovo citizens who travel in the Schengen area for up to three months. However, it could he heard unofficially in EU diplomatic circles that France, the Netherlands and at least three other EU members believe that this should not be allowed for the time being.
There are also reservations among the EU members that do not recognize the unilaterally proclaimed independence of Kosovo, and it remains to be seen whether people from Kosovo will be able to travel in the entire Schengen area with passports that declare them as citizens of the "Republic of Kosovo."
