"Shout Allahu Akbar in Venice, and you'll get shot"

"Should anyone run into St. Marco's Square and start yelling, "Allahu Akbar" - we'll shoot them," Brugnaro said, according to the Times.

But - said the British paper - "his 'threat' was not taken seriously, "and he became the joke of the conference that he attended."

While visiting Rimini - a town in Italy - Brugnaro stressed that it was "safer than Barcelona."

"Compared to Barcelona, that had no defense prepared, we are prepared," the mayor stressed while speaking at a panel on the topic of radicalism and terrorism.

In March, Italian police successfully stopped members of a Kosovo jihadi cell from blowing up the Rialto Bridge in Venice.

Brugnaro recalled the success by saying, "in Venice we arrested four terrorists who wished to blow up the Rialto Bridge, saying they wanted to go to Allah. But, we sent them straight to Allah before they could do any damage."
