Austrian right-wing candidate hopes to get Serb votes

"What we as a party support is a Europe on the foundations of Christianity. If this position is close to them and if they do not want Europe to be Islamized, Austrians of Serb origin can find themselves in that (policy)," he told the paper.

Danas writes that Strache was last week generous in giving interviews to Serbian reporters - "with a clear goal: FPO's presidential candidate Norbert Hofer would find the support of the increasingly numerous Austrian Serbs with the right to vote very welcome."

Strache also announced that Hofer will visit Belgrade in the coming days, and meet with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic.

"I don't think the conversation will be about whether Nikolic will support Hofer, but about deepening our friendship and for Hofer, as the president of the parliament, and perhaps the future president of the republic, to work on improving Austria's ties with South Eastern Europe countries," said Strache.

The daily reported that he "praised President Nikolic, whom he has known for longer than PM Vucic."

"I met Vucic a few years back. I've had the opportunity to speak with him both in Belgrade and in Vienna. I've known Nikolic since he was the vice-president of the SRS. I respect both," he has been quoted as saying.

Strache added that Austrians find it important "not only historically but also geographically" to improve and deepen relations with countries like Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia, but also those from the Visegrad Group - "because Europe doesn't have to do only what Merkel says it should."
