Migrant crisis: EU gives Turkey EUR 600 million

The statement of the EU commissioner in charge of migration comes as the EU announced in Brussels it had approved "two direct grants worth EUR 600 million to support Syrian refugees and host communities in Turkey in the areas of education and health."

The EU will spend a total of EUR 3 billion in 2016 and 2017, provided that Turkey prevents migrants from leaving unimpeded for Greece, and later elsewhere in Europe.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said last week that the EU plans to reach similar agreements aimed at suppressing illegal migration with Egypt and other African countries.

The Europol law enforcement agency, meanwhile, said most migrant smugglers were Turkish citizens. According to the same source, smugglers illegally transferring migrants to Europe earned between five and six billion dollars last year alone.

Europol also said that organized crime networks showed great skill in adapting to new circumstances after the closing of the Balkan migrant route, by opening new routes from northern Africa. Europol also warned that the smuggling of migrants via Bulgaria was increasing.
