Israel's former President Shimon Peres has died aged 93, it has been reported on Wednesday.

Israel's former President Peres dies

Born in Poland in 1923 as Shimon Peresky, he emigrated to British-mandated Palestine at the age of 11 and went to school in Tel Aviv. He later studied in the United States.

Before the creation of the state of Israel he served in the Zionist military organization Haganah under the leadership of David Ben Gurion who soon became his political mentor.

Peres later worked for Ben Gurion, Israel's first prime minister, and made an important contribution to developing Israel's military capabilities, including its nuclear program.

In 1994, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and then Israeli PM Yitzhak Rabin.

Peres was the leader of Israel's Labor Party and served both as his country's prime minister and president.

When his seven-year mandate as president expired in 2014, Peres continued to be active in a peace center named after him, advocating coexistence between Jews and Arabs.

Shimon Peres will be buried in Jerusalem on Friday.

According to the Israeli media, the funeral will be attended by U.S. President Barack Obama, French President Francois Hollande, Pope Francis, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and Bill and Hillary Clinton, among others.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry also expects foreign ministers of Egypt and Jordan - the only two Arab countries that Israel has peace agreements with - to attend the funeral.
