Russia's response to NATO to be "adequate and effective"

He said that "the U.S. continues to strengthen its presence in Europe, particularly when it comes to the eastern front", reports Sputnik.

"Of course we will not remain a passive observer, instead we're going to take military measures that we consider necessary in order to compensate for the increased presence of NATO forces, which is not justified," said Grushko.

Speaking about Ukraine, he said that NATO played "an extremely negative role" - supporting those who want to resolve the conflict by military means.

Asked if he expected the Warsaw summit of NATO to take any steps in Ukraine, Grushko said that it will not happen "because NATO has already done everything it could."

"We see these ground forces trained by NATO instructors rotating on the line of separation in the southeast of Ukraine. This shows that the military option still exists in the heads of Ukrainian authorities, that is, that it is possible they may wish to have a so-called military rematch," said Grushko.

On Wednesday, reports cited unnamed U.S. officials as saying that the Pentagon would deploy an armored brigade in Eastern Europe in February 2017.
