At least 72 people have been killed and 200 others wounded in a suicide bomber attack in front of a park in Lahore, Pakistan.

72 dead in Pakistan attack "targeting Christians"

“We carried out the Lahore attack as Christians are our target,” AFP quoted Ehsanullah Ehsan as telling them today.

The spokesman for Taliban faction Jamaat-ul-Ahrar added the group would "carry out more attacks in the future, including on schools and colleges."

Earlier, Pakistani police official Haider Ashraf said that "everyone went to that park" and that the police supposed that Christians had not been the target, "because most of the victims are Muslims."

Many women and children are among the victims.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was among those who condemned the attack on Sunday, calling it a an "appalling" act of terrorism.

"The secretary general strongly condemns the suicide bombing today at Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park in the Pakistani city of Lahore. The secretary general calls for the perpetrators of this appalling terrorist act to be brought swiftly to justice, consistent with human rights obligations," a UN statement said.
