Warring sides in Syria still need to confirm ceasefire

Beta agency is reporting that the warring factions - except Islamic State "and a branch of Al Qaeda" - have until Friday at noon local time to declare a cease-fire that should start at midnight, a statement issued by the U.S. and Russia said.

The presidents of the two powers, Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin, discussed late on Monday the agreement on a cease-fire in Syria, stating that the warring parties "should respect the agreement, in order to reduce the suffering of the Syrian people and place the emphasis on the fight against Islamic State."

Putin said afterwards that Russia, as a military ally of the Syrian regime, will "do everything" so that Damascus respects the cessation of hostilities, expressing the hope that the U.S. would do the same with "rebel groups."

A humanitarian aid convoy of 40 trucks on Monday arrived in the vicinity of Damascus, to a town surrounded by Syrian forces.

The conflict in Syria, which began five years ago began with a revolt of the opposition, turned into a complex war that includes international and regional forces, which caused, in addition to the 260,000 victims, a humanitarian catastrophe.
