Mogherini, Lavrov to discuss fight against IS in Belgrade

EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Russian FM Sergei Lavrov will meet the margins of the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Belgrade next week.

Mogherini, Lavrov to discuss fight against IS in Belgrade

The two officials will "discuss the pressing issues and fight against terrorism," reported Tanjug.

In a phone conversation, Mogherini conveyed to Lavrov her condolences "for the Russians soldier killed yesterday (Tuesday)," the European Union External Action Service (EEAS) said in a statement.

"After the downing of a Russian jet plane on the Turkish-Syrian border, Mogherini, in separate phone calls with the Russian and Turkish foreign ministers, stressed the need to avoid further escalation, preserve the diplomatic talks on Syria and unite forces against Daesh (Islamic State)," said EEAS.

Mogherini and Lavrov "agreed on the need to safeguard the diplomatic track for the Syrian crisis opened in Vienna, and to proceed with the timeline decided at the last meeting of the International Syria Support Group, as the most effective basis for effectively defeating Daesh on the ground."

In a separate call the day before, Mogherini "addressed the same messages to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu: in this conversation, she reiterated the importance of avoiding any further escalation and to advance the political process launched in Vienna."
