Russia "ready to consider sending troops to Syria"

Russia "ready to consider sending troops to Syria"

Asked whether Russia would agree to send troops to participate in military operations together with the Syrian army, Peskov said: "If there is a request, than in the framework of bilateral contacts, in the framework of bilateral dialogue, it will, of course, be discussed and considered. For now, it is rather difficult to speak hypothetically."

Syrian Vice Premier and Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on Thursday said Syria would ask Russia to send its troops to fight on the side of the Syrian army if such a need arose. According to him, Syria will not hesitate to ask for support from Russia.

"From the very beginning of the conflict Russia has been timely providing assistance to Syria," he said, according to TASS, and "admitted that Russia’s firm stance has had an increasing influence on the Western countries’ approaches to the Syrian crisis."

Muallem also told the Syrian state television that the army has so far been able to fight alone but that it needs more quality weapons and ammunition to confront terrorist groups.

Last week Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russian military presence in Syria was no secret, and that Russian military experts were there to train Syrian soldiers in using Russian weapons.

Lavrov did not rule out other kinds of Russian engagement - if Syrians or anyone else in the region made such a request.

The AP is reporting that Russia on Thursday "called on the U.S. and its allies to join the Syrian government as partners in the fight against Islamic State."
