Russia, however, maintains it is sending military equipment to Syria to assist the government of that country in fighting Islamic State, according to BBC."There are indications that Russia is deploying personnel and equipment in the area of Latakia airport and near the port, which indicates that it plans to set up some kind of air base at that location," Davis said, adding that Washington is concerned that Russian military moves might be in conflict with the airstrikes against IS carried out by the United States and members of a coalition that is fighting against the terrorist organization.
U.S. officials also fear that Russian support for Syria could strengthen the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and complicate recent efforts to find a political solution to the conflict, according to BBC.
Two Russian planes with 80 tons of humanitarian aid landed a few days ago at the airport in Latakia, in the midst of allegations that Moscow is strengthening military support for its ally Damascus.
Russian Ministry of Defense representative Major General Igor Konashenkov said that Antonov An-124s delivered humanitarian aid in the form of basic necessities and food for civilians, and equipment to build a camp that will accommodate more than 1,000 refugees.
