Migrants still stranded in front of Budapest train station

Groups of citizens help the police maintain order, AP reported, while volunteers are attempting to provide migrants with food, clothes, and medical assistance.

The Hungarian Helsinki Committee warned earlier that the situation was "very tense and unpredictable," said AFP.

Angry migrants want the Keleti station reopened for them, so they can travel to Germany.

Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said the station was closed for migrants because his country was attempting to apply EU laws - every person who wishes to travel in Europe must have valid travel ID and a Schengen visa.

Most of the migrants - whose numbers rose dramatically over the past five days - are Syrians who wish to travel to Austria or Germany but do not carry appropriate documents.

In August alone 50,000 migrants and refugees, mostly from war-torn regions of Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, entered Hungary. A majority wish to continue toward western Europe, mostly to Germany.

According to the German police, a record 3,500 asylum seekers arrived in Bavaria on Tuesday. Sweden announced the same day that the number of asylum applications there came "close to a record."

Hungarian, German, and Austrian police have formed joint patrols to control trains running on the Belgrade-Vienna-Budapest line, while Hungarian and Slovakian police monitor those headed for Bratislava.
