The U.S. administration has warned the European Union not to allow Greece's financial and economic collapse, as it would be "geopolitically a mistake."

U.S. warns EU against "geopolitical mistake" with Greece

“It’s a mistake for the European economy, for the global economy, to take the risks involved with an uncontrolled crisis in Greece. It’s geopolitically a mistake," said Lew.

Greece needs debt restructuring and a sustainable reform plan, the U.S. official stated, and added that creditors should lead Greece to the path of sustainable public debt and growth.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde has hinted that debt relief may be necessary, but Germany, as the biggest creditor in Europe, is strongly opposed to the idea.

Lew has voiced support for the IMF position that the Greek debt is currently not sustainable.

He also noted that the U.S. was carefully monitoring the situation in China, "where stock exchanges are reporting strong turbulence," and added he hoped this will not endanger China's economic reforms.
