Egypt launches air strikes in response to execution of Copts
According to reports from correspondents in Libya, at least eight targets were hit, while the Egyptian military said it was "just the beginning of the response" to the mass execution of the abducted Egyptian Christians."Air strikes were carried out in order revenge the massacre and punish the murderers. Let those who are close to us and those who are far away know that Egypt has a shield that defends them," the army said.
The statement added that all aircraft returned safely from retaliatory operations.
Libyan forces "joined in the attacks," according to reports.
The Islamic state published a video on Sunday showing jihadists decapitating 21 Copts previously kidnapped in Libya. The murders prompted the Egyptian authorities to declare seven days of mourning.
The murders were described as barbaric and condemned by the highest Sunni Islamic body, the Al Azhar, who announced that the act "has nothing to do with any religion or human values."
