Poroshenko calls on western countries to supply weapons

"It is very important that NATO assesses the seriousness of the risks involved with Russia and its hybrid warfare. The escalation of the conflict with Europe and endangering of the entire Euro-Atlantic security system is very realistic. NATO must take part in the conflict, considering the terrorist attacks on Volnovakha and Donetsk, as well as the massacre of civilians in Mariupol. NATO must deliver modern weapons to Ukraine that can protect it against the aggressor," said Poroshenko.

He added that Ukraine "wants peace, but peace is only possible through defense, which is again possible with a strong army and modern weapons."

"It would help to save civilians from intense attacks of terrorists. Soldiers of the DNR and the LNR have arms, Russia sends it to them. I hope that the NATO policy will be extended to Ukraine in the future, not only as a country that is threatened, but as a special partner. Ukraine is fighting for the values of a united Europe, it is necessary for us in order to prevent Russia to conduct this senseless war," said Poroshenko.

He then added there were "5,000 to 9,000 Russian soldiers" in the Donbass region, and that the U.S. and NATO also had this information.

"Every day we get new evidence, the number of Russians is constantly growing. We cannot control the territory of our country near the border with Russia, a few hundred kilometers are occupied and out of our reach. The West must help us in every way. The defense takes a lot of money, and the previous regime left empty coffers," concluded Poroshenko.
