French and German officials on anti-Russian sanctions
The French president said he was expecting progress at talks in Kazakhstan on January 15 "where Ukraine's Western-backed leader Petro Poroshenko" is to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.Hollande's statement came after German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel warned on Sunday that tougher sanctions could "destabilize the situation in Russia and push the country into chaos."
Gabriel pointed out that this would "not be in the interest of Europe," reports AFP.
"The goal has never been to push Russia into chaos politically and economically, but to return Moscow to the negotiating table," he told the newspaper Bild am Sonntag.
"Whoever wants that will cause a much more dangerous situation for all of us in Europe," he said, recalling that Russia is a nuclear power.
In his opinion, those who want to "further destabilize" Russia's economic and political situation are guided by "completely different interests."
"Some in Europe and the United States want to see the old rival Russia on its knees, but that is not in the interest of Germany or of Europe," said Gabriel.
"We want to help to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, and not force Russia to fall to its knees," concluded the German official.
