Ukrainian president vows to defeat "cruel-hearted foe"

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said during his New Year's message that Ukraine "will win this patriotic war."

Ukrainian president vows to defeat "cruel-hearted foe"

"A cruel-hearted foe has encroached on our lives, territory, freedom and independence. We will definitely win this patriotic war because for us, it is just. Truth is on our side. God is with us," said Poroshenko.

The agency noted that he delivered the speech "without mentioning Russia or President Vladimir Putin by name."

AFP described relations between Kiev and Moscow as "more hostile than at any point since the 1991 breakup of the USSR," and pointed out that "both Poroshenko and NATO" accuse Russia of supporting the rebel uprising in eastern Ukraine.

But Putin and Poroshenko are "tentatively expected" to meet on January 15 in Kazakhstan, while according to the latter, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande will also participate.
