Latvia assumes EU's rotating presidency
Latvia has taken over from Italy the presidency of the European Union, saying its priorities are increased competitiveness and energy independence of the Union.

"Particular attention will be paid to the development of the energy union concept and strengthening of energy independence and the internal market," she said.In preparation for the presidency, Latvia for a year and a half trained over a thousand public administration workers about the functioning of the EU and the way in which political decisions are made in Brussels.
Riga also recently presented a gift to Brussels - an 18-meter tall Christmas tree that was decorated and placed in the main square of the capital of Belgium.
Luxembourg will be the next country presiding over the EU for six months, starting in July.
