EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn has said that EU's enlargement will not be possible during the next five years, "for technical reasons."

"Technical reasons prevent EU enlargement in next 5 years"

Hahn said that the negotiations with Croatia lasted eight years, that Turkey - a candidate since 1999 - is "a special case," that there is a EU Council order to have "negotiations with an open result" - and that the negotiations with Serbia and Montenegro "just started."

At the same time, he admitted that there is enlargement fatigue among EU citizens, while it is "essential to create preconditions so that new members are not considered a burden, but the strengthening of the Union."

For this to happen, he explained, it is necessary to stimulate the candidates' economies, increase their well-being and prevent the outflow of skilled labor.

"Any country that wants to become a member itself determines the speed of accession," asserted EU's enlargement and neighborhood policy commissioner.

As for the neighborhood policy, he said it would have to be "rearranged" due to "the new situation on the continent," while the main goal "must be peaceful coexistence with 16 neighboring countries."

This "ring of friends" has become a "ring of fire," Hahn remarked about the situation in EU's southern and eastern neighborhood.

He mentioned the Ukrainian crisis, tensions with Russia, as well as the conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa.

"We are searching for the possibilities of lifting the sanctions against Russia and we want peaceful coexistence. We are a peace project," he said, adding that "within these relations it must be identified if a country can become an EU member, if there is a balanced relationship, or if it is a neighbor of Europe."
