Former Czech leader blames West for Ukraine crisis

Vaclav Klaus has accused the West, especially the United States, for escalating the crisis in Ukraine and an attempt to be "world's only policeman."

Former Czech leader blames West for Ukraine crisis

"It had to be clear that the extremely strong position of the United States after the fall of communism could not last forever... It was clear that Russia would try to restore partially the position it held for almost half a century since the end of World War II, which was lost after the defeat in the Cold War," wrote Klaus.

"Ukraine is an artificial administrative creation, connecting areas that have little to do with each other, with no common identity, traditions, historical experience," he noted in the chapter dedicated to that country.

"The West, primarily the United States and a number of Europeans in the West sensed that, sharpening further the crisis, and above all they have tried and are trying to blame it on Russia," said Klaus.

The former Czech leader was among the most vocal Eurosceptics among EU heads of state and government, and used this opportunity to again criticize Brussels. He accused the EU because be believes the world and the Czech Republic with it are heading back to an era of central decision-making with suppression of freedoms, as before the fall of communism in 1989.

"A lot of people do not see this return because it is taking place in different scenes, in different colors, with different slogans and in different suits, but it is a return to a world that is much more orchestrated from the center, regulated, controlled, a world where the ordinary little man has far less freedom than we anticipated in 1989," said Klaus on Tuesday as he was promoting his book.
