Putin talks to Merkel; Russia responds to western sanctions

He accused the Ukrainian authorities for this difficult situation, the Kremlin said.

Putin and Merkel "welcomed the work of observers of the OSCE," which is located on the Russian-Ukrainian border.

Merkel noted that the primary goal was "stabilization in Ukraine, which itself must determine its future." The chancellor "urged Russia to influence the militia to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine," a German government official said.

The Russian president noted the importance of establishing a real political dialogue between Kiev's authorities and leaders of the protest regions, Itar-Tass said.

Also on Wednesday, U.S. President Barack Obama said that American sanctions against Russia, introduced "because its actions in the Ukraine" are producing results.

Obama added that Washington would deal with "different issues" if Moscow, by chance, decided to invade eastern Ukraine.

Earlier in the day, it was announced that Putin signed an order banning imports of agricultural products from all countries that previously imposed sanctions on Russia.

As reported by RT, this order will be in force for one year.

The United States and the EU do not recognize the accession of Crimea to Russia and accuse Moscow of interference in the internal affairs of Ukraine, which Russia denies, calling the accusations unacceptable.

Since March, western countries have repeatedly introduced sanctions against Russian politicians, businesspeople and companies, threatening that such measures will increase.
