"The position of High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy is a priority," Polish government official Pawel Gras said confirming unofficial reports that Poland had sent a proposal to Brussels.

"Sikorski is in the opinion of the Polish right wing opposition too soft on Russia and according to EU to politicians too hard. According to the assessment of all, he is competent. So that means he is just right," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Twitter.

But analysts estimate that Poland's chances of getting the office are not great because of complicated agreements on the balance between main factions in the European Parliament, as the head of the European Commission was delegated by the right wing. At the same time, the EC is trying to have more women in its ranks, and so far as only the Czech Republic and Sweden have nominated women.

"Sikorski has only two disadvantages - he is not s socialist, and he is not a woman," said Tusk during the last EU summit that failed to produce a deal on dividing the top jobs.

Observers also do not rule out that Sikorski's candidature is only a part of Poland's efforts to get some of the sectors that are more important to that country than EU diplomacy, such as energy, internal markets, and competition.
