“Records show that the Ukrainian Air Force plane ascended to the distance of 3-5 km from the Malaysian Boeing,” head of the Main Operations Department of the Russian Army General Staff Andrei Kartopolov said.

Addressing a news conference, he added that that Russia "would like to know why the Ukrainian plane was flying along a civilian route on the same flight path as the Malaysian Boeing."

The statement comes as yet another accusation presented in the wake of the crash last week that killed 298 people.

Ukraine claims that pro-Russian separatists in the area around Donetsk are responsible, and that their weapons are "supplied by Russia," and western countries are coming out with similar assessments.

On the other hand, representatives of the self-proclaimed Republic of Donetsk and Russian officials reject the accusations and say the plane was downed by the Ukrainian army.

A full investigation into the crash of the aircraft is yet to be launched, and an international team that would be involved has not yet been set up.

A train that is carrying the bodies of the victims is currently blocked by pro-Russian separatists, who hold the area of the crash site under their control.

It is also unknown what is happening with the plane's black boxes, which have been recovered by the pro-Russian self-defense forces.

Ukraine insists that the black boxes be transferred to Kiev and examined there, while Russia wants them examined by a newly formed body that would work under the auspices of the UN.
