Libya: Main airport shut down, aircraft destroyed

"A number of missiles were fired," according to this, also demolishing the control tower at the international airport in Tripoli.

The fighting between "liberal and Islamist militias" in their brutal power struggle forced the closure of the main international airport in Libya, leaving the North African country "increasingly isolated," said western news agencies.

Shortly after the attack on the airport, the Libyan government announced that it was considering inviting "an international force" to restore security and help it impose its authority.

A statement added that these troops would "protect civilians, prevent anarchy and allow the government to build up the army and police."
