Turkey ordered to pay compensation to journalists

Nedim Sener and Ahmet Sik were arrested in 2011 and accused of conspiring and supporting Ergenekon - an organization suspected of preparing a coup.

Sener and Sik were released March 2012 after a year of detention, but they still could be sent to jail for 15 years.

As part of the Ergenekon case, several members of the organization have already received prison sentences.

The Strasbourg-based court said on Tuesday Turkish authorities had failed to provide "sufficient and relevant evidence" as reason for the reporters' prolonged detention.

"Measures like long detention can create an atmosphere of self-censorship for all investigative reporters who want to speak out about the behavior and actions of state authorities," said the European judges.

Turkey is to pay EUR 20,000 to Sener, and EUR 10,000 to Sik for causing them "moral damage."

Sener won the Press Freedom Hero award given by the International Press Institute, while Sik received UNESCO's Press Freedom Prize.

Their arrest sparked numerous reactions from international journalist associations.
