Russian parliament approves sending troops to Ukraine

It was decided that the troops will be sent to the Ukrainian territory until the socio-political situation in the country stabilizes, reports RT.

Previously, the upper and the lower house of the Russian parliament asked Putin to protect Russian citizens in Ukraine.

In Kiev, Vitaly Klichko, former boxer and one of the leaders of the Ukrainian opposition that ousted Yanukovych, asked the authorities to declare mobilization of Ukrainian troops after the news came from Moscow.

He also called on the UN Security Council to meet urgently in order to discuss the crisis in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, protests were taking place on Saturday in the town of Kharkov, and pro-Russian demonstrators occupied the buildings of the local administration and raised the Russian flag, Russian news agencies said. According to these reports, 97 people have been injured.

Kharkov is located in northeast Ukraine and is the second largest city in the country.

At the same time, as AFP reports, more than 10,000 people demonstrated in the streets of the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk.

Russian media said that the Ukrainian flag was removed from the local administration building, and the Russian flag raised instead.

AFP said that protesters in Donetsk, a stronghold of ousted President Viktor Yanukovich, are chanting slogans in support of "aspirations of Crimea to join Russia."

"We are amazed at what is happening in Kiev. We will not allow th nationalists to come to our city," said one 40-year-old protester.

The Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea earlier on Saturday set up a local special police unit that will keep public order and peace in the peninsula, news agencies reported.
