MOSCOW Russia on Tuesday morning launched the biggest security operation in the history of the Olympic games, a month before the start of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Authorities deployed more than 30,000 security officers in the Black Sea region, and starting today, all movement and all approaches will be under strict control. The biggest concern of the Russian government are threats from Islamic extremists from the North Caucasus and messages sent by fugitive Chechen leader Doku Umarov, who has called on his "fighters" to attack the Winter Olympics. The threats came in the days late in December when 34 people were killed in Volgograd in two terrorist attacks. Sochi has been divided into two security zones - one near the Olympic venues with limited access for people with tickets, passes and authentication, while the other will be "the forbidden zone" around the Black Sea town. Vehicles that do not have local registration or special accreditation will be denied access, while all sales of weapons, explosives and ammunition have been suspended.
