BELGRADE The Japanese prime minister has said that he would like to meet with Chinese and South Korean leaders and explain why he visited a controversial war shrine. "I would like to explain my true intentions regarding my visit Yasukuni. There was no direct call to schedule the meeting, but the door to dialogue is open, as always," said Shinzo Abe, as quoted by Reuters. Japanese PM to "explain" visit to controversial shrine Abe in December visited the shrine, built in 1869 in memory of the Japanese who gave their lives in the service of the emperor. Among the 2.5 million Japanese honored in this way are more than a thousand convicted war criminals from the WW2 era. China and South Korea are particularly sensitive to the visit of Japanese officials to the Yasukuni temple, as these two countries suffered under Japanese occupation. Such visits have often led to mass protests. Abe also stated that he would "certainly" convince Beijing and Seoul that his visit to the temple was justified, and that they would "understand it."
