Previously, news agencies reported that 40 people had died and that the authorities feared that hundreds of others may have perished as well. The BBC is quoting the U.S. Geological Survey to report that the epicenter was close to Iran's border with Pakistan, and located at the depth of 16 kilometers. The tremors were felt throughout the Gulf States, and even in New Delhi, India. Russia Today is reporting that the city close to the epicenter, Khash, had over 56,000 residents as of 2006. The Russian developer of the Bushehr nuclear power plant said the reactors were not affected by the quake, the TV channel said, and added that last Tuesday Iran endured a strong earthquake that struck near Bushehr, killing almost 40 people.
