MOSCOW Two gunmen have shot and killed a Russian ruling party official in northern Caucasus, where Moscow is fighting against Islamist insurgents. Unidentified gunmen stormed the office of Boris Zherukov in Nalchik, the capital of the Kabardino-Balkaria province, and shot him with two bullets to the head, said the Russian Investigative Committee in a statement quoted by Reuters. He was also rector of the State Agricultural University. The rebels, who are fighting to establish an Islamic state in Muslim regions of this part of Russia, carry out almost daily bombings and armed attacks against Russian officials and police. The violence, which, according to Reuters, "has been further fueled by discontent over unemployment, corruption and police brutality" is largely confined to the North Caucasus, where Moscow has fought two wars against separatist rebels in Chechnya since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
