MADRID Left-wing Basque nationalist parties must go further to fight for an independent state, the armed Basque separatist group ETA said Thursday. The statement comes ahead of early elections next month in the Spanish region. ETA urges Basque parties to do more for independence ETA said the "izquierda abertzale" - the term used for Basque parties that are nationalist and left-wing - is poised to do well at the polls and "should be prepared to respond to existing challenges and those that are coming", AFP has reported. "We can say that the izquierda abertzale put the process of liberation on the right track but we are only on the beginning of the path," ETA added in a statement published in pro-independence Basque daiy Gara. ETA believes it “would be making a mistake if we stick to what we have obtained and conclude that it is enough," adding that left-wing Basque nationalists need to "correct mistakes and fill gaps". In August the head of the Basque regional government, Patxi Lopez, called snap elections for October 21, a year after ETA renounced violence, AFP says. Polls show left-wing Basque nationalists who will present themselves in the election under a new coalition, Euskal Herria Bildu, could finish in second place, behind the Basque Nationalist Party, which favors greater autonomy.
