U.S. sends warships to Libyan shores

The U.S. Navy has sent two warships to Libyan waters after the U.S. ambassador in that country was killed in attacks by Islamic extremists in Benghazi.

WASHINGTON The U.S. Navy has sent two warships to Libyan waters after the U.S. ambassador in that country was killed in attacks by Islamic extremists in Benghazi. "Two destroyers will dock near the Libyan coast, but only as a preventive measure," said an unnamed U.S. military official said, adding that the sending a ship does not mean an impending military operation. An unnamed U.S. official said that the staff of the consulate in Benghazi were evacuated to Germany and a number of American diplomats withdrawn from Tripoli. The UN Security Council and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the murder of the American ambassador and three U.S. Consulate officials in Benghazi. Libyan Deputy UN Ambassador Ibrahim Dabas accused "an extremist group" for the attack, and reiterated his government's promise that the perpetrators will be brought to justice, the AP reported.
