BEIRUT Iran could attack American bases in the Middle East if Israel attacks one of its nuclear facilities, said the leader of the Lebanon-based Hezbollah movement. "The decision was made to answer and the answer would be great. The response will not include only the Israeli entity, but the U.S. bases in the whole region could be the target of Iran," Hassan Nasrallah told Beirut's Al Mayadeen TV. Iran could attack U.S. bases, says Hezbollah leader As reported by Reuters, Nasrallah said Iranian officials told him that if Israel attacks Iran, "America bears responsibility". He, however, expressed doubt that Israel will in fact attack Iran's nuclear facilities, because "there are disagreements among Israel's leadership on this issue." "Personally, I do not expect the Israeli enemy, at least not in the foreseeable future, to attack the Islamic Republic of Iran," said Nasrallah. The Hezbollah leader added his organization does not possess chemical weapons, but that in the event of a new war with Israel, they would do "great harm" to that country. He warned that Hezbollah had missiles that can find targets throughout Israel. Hezbollah "has no need for chemical or nuclear weapons as there are targets in Israel, that if you are hit, you could have the same effect," Nasrallah added. The AP agency reported that he was likely referring to Israeli nuclear facilities. In 2006, Israel and Hezbollah were engaged in a one-month war that claimed the lives of 1,200 Lebanese and 160 Israeli citizens. During the hostilities, Hezbollah fired nearly 4,000 missiles against Israel, and it is believed that the organization in the meantime improved their weapons capabilities.
