Outbreaks have never spread outside villages because the entire population would die, in most cases in the first 24 hours, before anyone could reach a bigger town. However, the situation is somewhat different in a village where the last epidemic broke out ten days ago. One of the villagers managed to reach a hospital in Kampala where he died soon after. Panic gripped the city immediately after citizens had learnt about his death. Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has said that the country is facing a crisis. “Ebola broke out again and one of the infected men came to Kampala and the infection threatens everyone. Doctors who were in contact with him have already become sick and people who burnt his body after he died,” he noted. A large-scale epidemic is possible even though Uganda has closed all schools and public institutions in Kampala. There is no known cure for the virus. “Kampala is a large city, with airline connections with the entire world. It will be enough if only one infected patient, who picked up the virus only hours before, gets on a plane to Paris or Vienna and go through that airport in order for the disease to start spreading uncontrollably across the world,” infectious disease expert James Borcher says. He added that this was a highly contagious disease which is transmitted by physical contact such as a handshake or accidental touch. Chances of survival are practically nonexistent. The symptoms develop quickly and victims usually die 24 hours after the virus entered their system.
