Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been jailed for life, after being found guilty of ordering killing of hundreds of protesters in the 2011 uprising. The 84-year-old is the first deposed leader to go before a regular court in person, since a wave of unrest shook the Arab world last year. Some wanted the former president to be sentenced to death – not sent to jail. More than 800 protesters were killed during last year’s uprising. A former Interior Minister also received a life sentence over the deaths. Mubarak, who plans to launch an appeal, is said to have now been transferred from a military hospital to a prison.
