NATO has not conducted a proper investigation, or provided compensations for civilian casualties of its air strikes in Libya, said Amnesty International (AI). Echoing similar criticism voiced by Russia this month, the international human rights NGO said that many Libyans, although not involved in the conflict between Muammar Gaddafi's regime and armed rebels, were nonetheless "killed or wounded in the NATO bombing". NATO called on to properly investigate civilian deaths The western military alliance, however, has not conducted a proper investigation into their deaths, according to AI. "NATO officials have on several occasions emphasized their commitment to protection of civilians. They cannot now sweep the deaths of so many civilians under the carper with some vague expression of regret, without a proper investigation into the bloody incidents," said a senior adviser to AI, Donatella Rovera. The investigation should determine whether the civilian deaths were the result of any violation of international law and, if so, those responsible should be brought to justice, she said in a written statement. Reuters news agency reported that NATO planes carried about 26,000 sorties in some 9,600 raids in which some 5,900 targets were destroyed throughout Libya before the end of military operations on October 31 2011.
