28 persons, including 22 children, have been killed in a Belgian bus crash in southern Switzerland. The accident happened when the bus hit a tunnel wall head-on on A9 highway near the town of Sierre on Tuesday night. 28 people killed in bus crash in Switzerland The impact almost completely destroyed the bus. Rescue teams carried out rescue operation throughout the night. 24 children were rescued from the wreckage. Helicopters and ambulances took the injured persons to four hospitals in the canton of Valais but also to Lausanne and Bern. The bus was carrying elementary school students from Belgian towns of Lommel and Heverlee. The children, mostly 12-year-olds, were returning home from a ski trip to Val d'Anniviers in the Swiss Alps. Belgium's Ambassador to Switzerland Jan Luykx has already travelled to the crash site. "This tragedy will hit the whole of Belgium. The magnitude of the accident is difficult to take in. For the moment I am concentrating on the practical aspects. The emotional side will come when we meet the families," he said. Valais Canton Head Jacques Melly also expressed his deep sadness at the accident and praised the rescuers for their work in "extremely difficult conditions".
