President of the Interim National Council in Libya Mustafa Abdul Jalil today threatened to use force to prevent the secession of eastern parts of the country. Tribal leaders and local militia commanders in the eastern part of Libya declared yesterday the oil-rich area from the town of Sirte to the border with Egypt "semi-autonomous". Libya: Force to be used to deal with separatism Opponents fear that this move is the first step toward the partition of the country, six months after the ouster of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi. "We are not prepared for a division of Libya," said Abdul Jalil, quoted by state television. He called for dialogue with tribal leaders in the region, but also warned of, as he said, "the remains" of the regime of Muammar Gaddafi. "You must know that these residues and infiltrated elements of the Gaddafi regime seek to exploit you, we are ready to stop them, even with the use of force," he told the locals. The Libyan Transitional National Council, that is, the interim government based in Tripoli, has repeatedly expressed opposition to the formation of a partially autonomous region in the east, warning that it could lead to the disintegration of the country. The declaration of semi-autonomy on Tuesday was done with a ceremony in the eastern city of Benghazi, which was the center of rebellion against Gaddafi and a rebel stronghold. Tribal leaders said at the gathering that they wanted to end "decades of marginalization to which they were subjected during the reign of Gaddafi", and appointed a council to address issues concerning the newly created region. The longest-serving political prisoner during the previous regime, Al Zubair Ahmed was appointed head of the council. Al-Zubair, is also a member of the Interim National Council, and has vowed to protect the rights of the newly created region, but also that his council recognized the right of the government in Tripoli to conduct international affairs of the country.
