Preliminary indications suggest that two Islamist parties are leading in six out of nine provinces in Egypt holding parliamentary elections. RIA Novosti reports, quoting local media, that the Muslim Brotherhood's political wing Freedom and Justice Party and the Salafi Nour Party are in the lead. Early Egypt results show Islamists lead Egyptians completed the first round of voting in the first parliamentary elections since the January 25 uprising which led to the fall of the Hosni Mubarak regime. According to preliminary data, voter turnout was 70 percent, a record for Egypt. The second phase of parliamentary elections is scheduled for December 14-15. The election date was put into question by violent protests in Cairo and Alexandria last week against delays in the transition to civilian rule following February's overthrow of Mubarak. Over 40 people were killed and hundreds injured. The elections will become the first serious step in handing over power to democratically elected authorities.
