The Israeli embassy in Belgrade says that admission of Palestine as a full-fledged UNESCO member on Monday in Paris was "a tragic mistake". It will have consequences for other disputed territories around the world, warned a statement from the embassy. "Israel believes that direct negotiations without preconditions are the only way to make progress in the diplomatic process with the Palestinians," concluded the statement. UNESCO made the decision to accept Palestine as a member when 107 countries voted in favor, with 14 against and 52 abstained. The United States, Germany and Canada were among those who voted against. Brazil, Russia, China, India, South Africa and France voted in favor, while Britain was among those countries that abstained.
