The part of Libya controlled by the government forces is facing shortages of fuel, food, and money, the UN mission in the north African country has announced. In a statement published late on Monday, the mission said that in the past seven days, it observed that "the government in Tripoli was facing shortages of fuel, rising food prices, reduced availability of money", while the country's health-care system is "under strain". UN: Libya needs urgent humanitarian aid “Although the mission observed aspects of normalcy in Tripoli, members identified pockets of vulnerability where people need urgent humanitarian assistance,” said acting UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya Laurence Hart. The UN introduced sanctions against the Gaddafi regime, making imports of oil and other products difficult, while at the same time some 30 countries recognized rebels as legitimate representatives of Libya, according to news agencies.
